Abstract;More than 50 critically sick patients are referred to our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) each year. Almost 10% of those patients died, and another 10% had severe neurological complications. To improve the patients' prognosis, an educational program of pediatric emergency and critical care medicine including pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and transporting systems must immediately be established, because it takes almost 5 hours from the time a patient becomes very sick at home or in a local hospitals until he or she starts intensive care in our PICU. We emphasize that PICU should be easily activated for all children who may become critically ill in the Nagano area, not only the few patients who have very special diseases. (author abst.)
