Abstract;Increasing numbers of cases of child abuse have been reported by nationwide surveys in Japan. Preventing maltreatment of children consists of (1) detecting high-risk groups of families and initiating support before they turn to abuse; (2) early recognition of an abused child and quick response; (3) and protecting the abused child and supporting the family. From these standpoints, we organized a Child Abuse Prevention Committee, which is assembled when a child is suspected of being maltreated. The committee has a network with other organizations in the community neighboring the hospital in order to seek help for the child. (author abst.)
