Abstract; We studied sputtering conditions for Tb-Fe system giant magnetostrictive thin film using Fe target with Tb chips on. The magnetostriction of the film shows 702 ppm at 80 kA/m by the condition, around 40 at% Tb composition, 0.7 Pa Argon pressure, and 300.DEG.C. annealing process. The magnetostrictive property has improved to 929 ppm by using Tb-Fe alloy target composed of multiphases (Tb metal, Fe metal, TbFe2 intermetallic compound). However, the curie temperature of this giant magnetostrictive thin film is low (about 150.DEG.C.), so the improvement of the curie temperature by researching new giant magnetostrictive thin film material is very important subject for the purpose of any applications.
