Abstract; The future of clinical use of Chinese medicinal drugs is discussed, and, as an example, preclinical and clinical development of irinotecan from the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminate is briefly introduced. The leaves of Camptotheca acuminate are believed in China people to be effective against human gastric cancer. Yakult and other companies extracted irinotecan and topotecan from those leaves, and they are now in clinical use against various human cancers in adults and children. In connection with irinotecan, development of digitoxin, reserpine, quinine alkaloid, morphine, and cocaine from herbs is briefly introduced, and further identification of new drugs from herbs is being encouraged.
