Abstract; The gastric mucosal immune system plays an important role in host defense including IgA response. Because Kampo medicines are taken orally, the gastric mucosal immune system may be one of the major targets for expression of pharmacological activity. The extract preparation Juzen-taiho-to stimulates the immune functions of Peyer's patch cells; however, its single component herbs show no such activity. It was found that the combined decoction of 6 of the 10 herbs in Juzen-taiho-to is crucial for the expression of its stimulating activity. This observation suggests that Juzen-taiho-to modulates the intestinal immune system by the combination effect of the component herbs. The present paper describes the modulating activity of Kampo medicine on the gastric mucosal immune system. (author abst.)
