Abstract; In this paper, we introduce the findings of our basic studies on Rikkunshi-to and Dai-kenchu-to. Rikkunshi-to improved impairment of gastric adaptive relaxation associated with nitric oxide in isolated guinea pig stomach, and significantly improved an L-NNA-induced decrease in gastric emptying in rats. These results suggest that Rikkunshi-to not only enhances gastric motility but also improves gastric receptive function. Dai-kenchu-to enhanced intestinal motility by activating the cholinergic nerve system and sensory nerve system in guinea pig ileum. In addition, Dai-kenchu-to also increased intestinal blood flow via CGRP. These actions of Dai-kenchu-to may be associated with its ileus-improving effect. (author abst.)
