| Abstract;Gastroesophageal reflux is a life-threatening problem, particularly in neurologically impaired children. Although surgical intervention significantly improves their quality of life, gastric emptying can still be a problem after a successful operation. This study was designed to evaluate postoperative gastric emptying using radioisotopes. Twenty-three patients underwent Nissen's fundoplication. Sixty-four-minute data was obtained after the injection of formula labeled with 99mTc-DTPA. Time-activity curve was obtained to analyze the half emptying time (T1/2) and the emptying pattern. In seven patients who showed prolonged emptying, the effect of an herbal medicine named Rikkunshito was assessed. T1/2 of the cardiac region was longer than that of the antral region in patients with pyloroplasty. After Rikkunshito trial for 7 patients, whole-stomach T1/2 fell into proper range owing to shortening of cardiac T1/2. All patients showed prolonged emptying, and Rikkunshito improved their gastric dynamics. (author abst.) |
