Abstract; The Gauss-Bonnet dark energy model is proposed based on the string/M-theory. The model contains a scalar field in addition to the standard gravity, and there appears a scalar-dependent interaction with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The interaction term is important even when the curvature is small, and the phantom (or quintessence) phase appears at the late universe. The phase becomes transient when the scalar potential is dominant due to the increase of the curvature. In this case, the acceleration of the current universe is caused by string effect. It is pointed out that the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet coupling precludes the occurrence of Big Rip.
