| Abstract; Objective: To examine the family environment, family functioning as well as the associated behaviour of a national sample of school-going adolescents with and those without conduct problems. Design: A cross-sectional survey design was used. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of adolescents with conduct problems and adolescents without conduct problems. 333 adolescents from the study group and 452 adolescents from the comparison group were included for the final analysis. They were initially screened using Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). All the adolescents and their parents were given the self-report Family Assessment Device (FAD). Parents had to answer another questionnaire concerning their socio-demographic status. Results: The study group had higher mean scores on all dimensions of FAD. They also had high hyperactivity and peer relationship SDQ scores. Other factors that significantly differentiate the two groups include, gender, the presence of male siblings, ordinal position in the family, parents' satisfaction in their relationship with the adolescents and parents' recognition of the adolescents' peers. Conclusion: Adolescents with conduct problems tend to perceive their family functioning negatively. (author abst.) |
