| Abstract; Objective: To study changes in plasma interleukin-13 (IL-13) in patients with acute cerebral infarction and its effects on cerebral inflammatory reactions. Design: A clinical study. Materials and Methods: The levels of plasma IL-13 measured in 8 patients with acute cerebral infarction group using enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) were compared to those in control A (with risk factors for stroke) and control B (healthy group). Results: As compared with the controls, the levels of plasma IL-13 were increased during three periods in the cerebral infarction group (p<0.01), showing a higher level in moderate and severe patients and the levels on the 6th to 8 th day were highest. Conclusion: IL-13 may play a role in downregulation of inflammatory reactions to acute cerebral infarction. (author abst.) |
