Abstract;Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NPPV) has become popular to treat acute respiratory failure. Multiple clinical trials have demonstrated that acute exacerbation of COPD, cardiogenic pulmonary edema, and immunocompromized patients are the best indication for NPPV. NPPV is used as a mean of preventing tracheal intubation in need of ventilatory assistance, thereby reducing the complications associated with intubation, shortening the duration of ICU stay, and improving mortality. However, Needed intubation should not be unduly delayed when further deterioration of patient status develops. In order to offer optimal therapy to patients with aforementioned types of respiratory failure, establishing team approach by physicians nurses, and comedicals are encouraged in using NPPV.
