Abstract; The difference between NPPV (noninvasive positive pressure ventilation) and IPPV (invasive positive pressure ventilation) is the presence of the endotracheal intubation. The benefits of NPPV include the avoidance of complications according to the endotracheal intubation. The most frequently encounterd complications are related to the mask, ventilator pressure or airflow. However, major complications are rare but could be happened. Major complications can be minimized by selecting appropriate patients. It is necessary to understand these complications of NPPV and the characteristics of NPPV ventilator. The cooperations of staffs other than the doctors are indispensable to success NPPV. (author abst.)
