Abstract;Alcohol consumption in Japan has shown rapid increase since 1945's by economic growth, increase in national income, changes in the life-style, etc. The increasing tendency has been kept even after 1985's with the popularization of the drinking habit of women who had less drinking opportunity. All consumption has leveled off since about 1992 even though there is wine and sparkling wine boom recently. However, the frequency of the alcoholic hepatopathy increases and it is guessed that the massive (habitual) drinking of women and the elderly people who easily cause the hepatic disorder with comparatively less drinking has generated this phenomenon. In Europe and America, the combination of viral hepatitis and alcoholic hepatitis occupies the majority, however, the involvement of hepatitis virus is in the declining tendency year by year in the liver cirrhosis which is thought to be the generation nucleus except for the hepatocellular carcinoma. The guidance for abstinence and cutting down on drinking to patients with viral hepatitis seem to have displayed the effects. It is important in the future to carry out the guidance for drinkers with problems including massive (habitual) drinkers of women and the elderly people.
