Design: Cross-sectional study: Methods: The study involving Four hundred and six patients attending Family Medicine clinic between July to September 2002 were interviewed face to face by the first author and trained assistants, using a validated questionnaire. Results: Overall prevalence of T/CM use was 63% during lifetime and 41% during the past 12 months. The users were significantly among male, Malay, married, high educational level and employed. Users were higher among age groups of 30-39 years old and 60 years and above, higher family income, with acute illness and poor/fair self-rated health. Herbal medicines were the most frequently used. The T/CM was used most frequently for specific health problems (64%) mainly involved musculoskeletal system. The strongest predictor for use of T/CM was health of respondent. Respondents who rated their health as good or excellent were less likely to use T/CM. Conclusion: The prevalence of use of T/CM among adult patients at the clinic was high. Hence, medical practitioners' awareness for the use of T/CM is important in treating patients. (author abst.)
