Abstract;Nine acute encephalopathy children were treated in ICU. They were transferred to our hospital because of convulsions. Seven patients were in coma status. A interval between the onset of fever and the onset of central nervous system symptoms was 1-2 days. The age of onset was around 1 year. The infections included HHV-6 (2 cases), influenza (2 cases), herpes simplex (1 case), and unknown etiology (4 cases). Two patients died after a rapid, fulminant course soon after the admission in ICU, 2 patients died after several days and 3 patients survived the disease with neurological sequelae. The treatments were symptomatic, with control of vital functions, brain edema as well as, antiepileptic medication. Artificial ventilation by SIMV was applied 8 in 9 patients and hypothermic therapy in 5 patients. The prognosis was poor in patients with metabolic acidosis, transaminase elevation, DIC and brain edema. (author abst.)
