| Abstract;Blood coagulation and the inflammatory response are interrelated as part of the innate host defense mechanism. New scientific avenues led to the current understanding that coagulation factors, like tissue factor (TF), Factor VII, Factor X and thrombin (II), are important players in inflammation, vascular development, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis. Coagulation-induced inflammation has recently gained attention; inhibition of coagulation (ex. activated protein C (APC), Factor Xa inhibitor, antithrombin III (ATIII)) during sepsis might be an important target for therapeutic intervention. The overall aim of this review is to summarize our current understanding concerning blood coagulation and inflammation. (author abst.) |
