Abstract; We report a case of an infant (a 3-year-old girl) hemolytic uremic syndrome caused by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, successfully treated with long term (for 20 days) continuous hemodiafiltration. The infant was forced to be under sedation and artificial ventilation for continuation of blood purification, although her consciousness was dramatically improved by only one hour hemodiafiltration. We selected continuous hemodiafiltration because of the occurrence of acute pancreatitis and disseminated intravascular coagulation, although peritoneal dialysis was considered indicated. We conclude that continuous hemodiafiltration is very effective for the treatment of infant haemolytic uremic syndrome, although some problems exist in this therapy. (author abst.)
