Abstract; Objective: By a telephone survey to find the views and practices of Digestive Disease Physicians regarding needle biopsy of liver. Methods: Telephone survey was conducted from Nov. 2003 to May 2004. One hundred and five physicians were contacted. The participation by physicians was 100%. They were asked to identify themselves as Gastroenterologists (Group I) or Hepatologists (Group II) or a combination (Group III). Results: Majority of the Luminal Gastroenterologists (72.3%) did not perform liver biopsy and referred their routine biopsies to the Radiologists. The most important reasons for not doing liver biopsy were inadequate reimbursement and fear of complications. Conclusion: A majority of luminal Gastroenterologists are not doing needle biopsy of the liver and routinely referring them to Radiologists; the implications are discussed. (author abst.)
