Abstract; We propose an algorithm for improving measurement accuracy of a surface-normal sensor. The sensor is based on scanning the light beam from a laser range sensor mechanically for the purpose of collecting three or more distance data within a small area. The light spot position is shifted a little bit to the original laser beam axis by rotating a set of two wedge-prisms. Principally, three distance data are enough to measure the surface-normal. However, in the case when high accuracy is needed, more points might be asked to be measured. For this case, we propose the beam spot positioning algorithm which casts the beam densely or coarsely in a specific direction depending on distance variation within the specific directions. Experimental results are shown to confirm validity of the algorithm. (author abst.)
