| Abstract;Carburizing and nitriding are types of heat treatment in which low-carbon steel is hardened after it is either carburized or nitrided to increase its carbon or nitrogen content; as a result higher surface hardness can be achieved. Relatively higher toughness in material is achieved as a hard layer is created near the surface, contrary to the lower hardness of low-carbon steel inside. The carbon or nitrogen content of the surface can be modified by changing the process conditions, so the surface hardness and the depth can be changed. Achieved are various features such as improved surface hardness, lesser pitting, wear and seizing resistance and higher durability. Therefore, carburizing and nitriding are widely used in the production of high-speed, rotating shafts, sliding parts, heavy-duty gears and parts for construction machines. (author abst.) |
