Abstract; The protective efficacy of activated charcoal containing wood vinegar liquid (Nekka-Rich) for intestinal infection with Cryptosporiduim parvam was studied. In the present study, the adsorption effect of activated charcoal of Nekka-Rich on C. parvam was examined. C. parvam was effectively adsorbed by activated charcoal of Nekka-Rich. The effect of wood vinegar liquid included in Nekka-Rich on the viability of C. parvam was also assessed. Wood vinegar liquid had a cytotoxic effect on C. parvam. Furthermore, the protective effect of Nekka-Rich was evaluated in calves naturally infected with C. parvam. C. parvam-infected calves were fed Nekka-Rich. Significantly less fecal excretion of C. parvam was observed in calves fed Nekka-Rich for 30 days after Nekka-Rich administration. On 40 days after Nekka-Rich giving, C. parvam was not isolated from fecal samples. On the other hand, fecal excretion of C. parvam was consistently observed in the non-treated control calves with C. parvam. These results suggest that Nekka-Rich would be a good product for eliminating the carriage of C. parvam in cattle. (author abst.)
