| Abstract;Renal tubular dysplasia was detected in a Japanese Black cattle diagnosed as heterozygote for claudin-16 deficiency and examined pathologically. Macroscopically, both kidneys were small with an uneven surface. Histopathologically, streaky-focal lesions occurred frequently from the cortex to the outer zone of the medulla. Small immature renal tubules and irregular shaped renal tubules with hypertrophic basement membrane existed in the present lesions. Mesenchymal cells showing high nuclear density were seen in the wide tubulointerstitial tissue of the present lesions. Glomeruli decreased remarkably, small glomeruli with atrophying of glomerular tufts and large glomeruli with a proliferation of mesangial cells intermingled. The present case was diagnosed as renal tubular dysplasia because small immature renal tubules were observed. From this study, it was clarified that there was a different genotyped animal from that of the already known claudin-16 deficiency in Japanese Black cattle, showing very similar renal lesions to those of the homozygote for claudin-16 deficiency.
