Abstract; Objectives: The purpose of this report was to compare the response rate of bipolar II depression and unipolar depression, and to examine the switching rate to mania of bipolar II depression with milnacipran, fluvoxamine, paroxetine or maprotiline. Design: A retrospective analysis of depressed patients was conducted. Methods: Total 293 patients were identified who were receiving milnacipran, fluvoxamine, paroxetine or maprotiline without any mood stabilizers to treat depression. Results: There were no difference in response rate among bipolar II depression and unipolar depression with four antidepressants treatment. Regarding to bipolar II depression, paroxetine treatment patients developed mania. Other antidepressants did not induce mania during 10 weeks treatment period without mood stabilizers. Conclusions: Milnacipran, fluvoxamine, and maprotiline may have low risk of switching mania for treatment without mood stabilizers in bipolar II depression. (author abst.)
