| Abstract; Objectives: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with urinary incontinence among adult women attending Family Medicine Clinic at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The study involved three hundred and twenty nine patients attending Family Medicine clinic between January to April 2004. They were interviewed face-to-face by first author using a validated questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) was found to be 40.4%. The most common type was stress incontinence (SUI) about 67%. Factors significantly associated with UI were respondent's age of 40 to 49 years, history of vaginal and forceps delivery, higher family income and those who were overweight. However, parity, occupation, education, past gynecological history including hysterectomy, place of residence and type of toilet were not significantly associated with the occurrence of UI. The majority of the respondents (87.2%) were not bothered by the condition. About 39.2% of them needed some forms of leakage protection and only 29.3% sought treatment. Conclusion: The prevalence of UI among adult women attending Family Medicine clinic was unexpectedly high. Though almost 40% of them needed leakage protection, only a few sought treatment. Hence medical practitioners need to be more proactive in seeking out these patients to ensure adequate medical cares are provided to them. (author abst.) |
