Abstract; The blood levels of nitrite/nitrate (NOx), endotoxin, tumor necrosis factor .ALPHA. (TNF-.ALPHA.), and interleukin 8 (IL-8) were measured in cases of sepsis. The levels of all of these humoral factors were significantly higher in the sepsis patients with acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) than in those without ALI/ARDS, suggesting that these humoral factors may be involved in the development of ALI/ARDS as a complication of sepsis. The possibility of a mutual relationship between ALI and ARDS mediated by the generation of these individual humoral factors was also suggested by the results. (author abst.)
