| Abstract;Atorvastatin is a strong lipid-lowering agent and has been shown to be effective in preventing cardiovascular diseases. In the present studies, we examined the effects of low dose (5 mg) of atorvastatin compared with regular dose of other conventional "statins". In patients with hypercholesterolemia treated with regular dose of other statins, exchange of the medication to low dose of atorvastatin significantly reduced total cholesterol (213.+-.7 mg/dL to 193.+-.6, p<0.0005), LDL cholesterol (129.+-.8 to 106.+-.7, p<0.0001), and triglyceride (121.+-.13 to 88.+-.8, p<0.0005) levels (n=13). Furthermore, in patients without any lipid-lowering agents, low dose of atorvastatin caused significantly greater fall of total cholesterol level compared with regular dose (10 mg) of pravastatin (68.5.+-.5.2 mg/dL vs. 42.5.+-.8.5, p<0.05). These results suggest that low dose of atorvastatin has stronger lipid-lowering effects compared with regular dose of conventional statins. (author abst.) |
