Abstract; The diffraction condition of a DVD spectroscope which was recently proposed by WAKABAYASHI and HAMADA (2006. J. Chem. Educ., 83 (1)) has been formulated and some simulation results are presented. This simple and inexpensive spectroscope that is made with a sheet of cardboard or an empty box and a digital versatile disk (DVD) gives high-resolution visible spectra. The incident angle of light has been formulated from its structural parameters. Using this formulation, one can calculate the diffraction angle of a certain wavelength light. This formulation can be applied to reflective grating spectroscopes with a similar structure such as CD spectroscopes, and facilitate the design of the spectroscopes. This formulation can be also used to estimate the grating density of a reflective grating. (author abst.)
