Abstract;The use of aluminum extrusions joined by friction stir welding (FSW) was examined under the supposition that such a method might produce a vehicle body structure with highly efficient joins that is also lightweight and low cost. The strength of an FSW joint of aluminum was compared with MIG and laser MIG welding in the fabrication of such a structure. Static and dynamic tests were performed in order to evaluate the collision strength of the FSW joint. As a result, it was determined that welding conditions largely determine the dynamic strength performance of the FSW joint. Additionally, modeling of an FSW joint was attempted and simulation methods were devised. (author abst.)
