Abstract;Four-dimensional effective theories are derived for warped compactification of 10D type IIB supergravity and 11D heterotic Horava-Witten model. It is shown that the 4D effective theories admit a wider class of solutions than the original higher-dimensional theories. The modular invariance of the effective theories implies that, if there exists a solution in which the internal space expands with the cosmic expansion, there is always a conjugate solution in which the internal space shrinks. It is pointed out that, if the higher-dimensional theories are regarded more fundamental, effective 4D theories should be used carefully.
