Abstract; We retrospectively analysed pain of patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in special attention to its frequency, sites, nature and management. We reviewed the medical records 27 GBS patients who had been admitted to the Mie University Hospital or to the Matsusaka Chuo Hospital during 1990 and 2000. Pain occurred in 18 patients (67%) during the course of illness. Pain was the first symptom and preceded muscle weakness in 6 patients, while pain developed at the late stage of illness in 4 patients when muscle weakness was improving. Nine patients felt pain in the legs, eight in the lower back, and eight in the thigh. Pain was presented as myalgia in 19 patients, and as neuralgia in 12 patients. Pain was relieved by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, antidepressants, or anti-epileptic drugs. The present study has shown that pain occurs either as the initial symptom before the motor symptoms come out or as the late manifestation while motor paralysis is improving. More attention to pain of GBS and its control should be paid to for correct diagnosis of GBS at the early stage and better quality of life although the cardinal and critical symptoms are still motor paralysis and respiratory failure.
