| Abstract;Colestimide is an anion-exchange resin, which is not absorbed in the small intestine, decreases intestinal reabsorption of bile acids synthesized from cholesterol in the liver, and consequently increases bile acid excretion into the feces. Bofu-tsusho-san, a traditional Chinese herbal remedy, contains 18 components and has long been used as an anti-obese agent. Previously, we demonstrated that the combined prescription of colestimide with Bofu-tsusho-san lowered the plasma and liver lipids more than each single use in mice fed a high-fat diet. Thus, we investigated the effects of colestimide plus Bofu-tsusho-san on obesity, hyperlipidemia and fatty liver in 30 perimenopausal outpatients visited Kawasaki Saiwai Clinic, Kanagawa, Japan, in 2004 to 2005. Neither medicine affected blood biochemical markers. The body mass indices (more than 25.0) and body weights of patients tended to decrease after treatment. Plasma levels of total cholesterol were markedly reduced to 87.3% of those before treatment, and plasma triglycerides were also lowered though not significantly. Fatty liver in low grade was observed to recover well with the treatment. (author abst.) |
