Abstract; In Japan, a collaborative system of medicine, architecture, and chemistry, which is essential to solve the problems of sick house syndrome and sick building syndrome, has not yet been developed. We explained flowcharts for solving the interdisciplinary problems and the knowledge of architecture and measurement needed for diagnosing sick house syndrome. In VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) measurement, which is important from a medical aspect, the standard method of measurement should be employed to obtain the maximum concentration value of the initiating factor. We suggested a cost-effective screening of VOCs. Although the use of formaldehyde and VOCs in newly built houses has been decreasing because of the sick house restriction measures, there is particular concern over health effects caused by the spread of alternative chemicals, risks of which to the human body are as yet unknown. In the context of increasing psychogenic disorders such as sick house and chemical sensitivity syndrome, the diagnosis of sick house syndrome is likely to become more difficult and complex.
