| Abstract; We have treated autoimmune bullous skin diseases (4 PVs, 1 PF, 5 BPs and 1 CP) resistant to conventional systemic corticosteroid therapy using Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF) in addition to corticosteroid therapy from April 2003 to October 2005. Clinical symptoms of all patients treated with MMF therapy improved and new bulla formation stopped and the titer of circulating antibodies (Dsg 1, 3, BP 180) gradually decreased. We found that MMF allowed a reduction in corticosteroid dosage without disease relapse. No severe side effects have been found. Two patients (1 PV and 1 BP) showed psycho-neurological side effects after administration of MMF over a 4-month period. The PV patient showed ptosis and tremor and the BP patient showed depression and sleep disturbance. It appears that MMF in combination with corticosteroids is effective and safe in the medium term. However, it has been difficult to discontinue or taper off MMF, therefore administration of MMF during the long term may cause unknown side effects. Further clinical observations will clarify the potential roles of this steroid sparing immunosuppressive agent. (author abst.) |
