Abstract; The usefulness of cosmetic products to conceal hypopigmented areas in vitiligo patients was evaluated. A covering foundation "PERFECT COVER VV" that was newly developed by Shiseido Co., Ltd. was used by 23 vitiligo patients (7 men and 16 women) to cover hypopigmented facial regions for 2 consecutive weeks. Skindex-16 and DLQI (Dermatology Life Quality Index) were used as a dermatologically specific QOL (Quality of Life) index and WHO QOL26 was used as the health outcome measure. The QOL was measured before and after 2 weeks of the study. In addition, VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) was used to evaluate patient satisfaction with the make-up. The skin color tone of the covered regions was also assessed. The QOL scores of Skindex-16, DLQI and WHO QOL26 significantly improved after application of the covering foundation (p < 0.0001, p = 0.0012 and p = 0.0003, respectively). It was found that the make-up could reduce the effect of the perceived psychological stigma caused by facial disfiguration and could improve impaired social relationships. The degree of the patients' satisfaction with the make-up was very high in both men and women. The skin color tone of the treated regions was adjusted to that of normal skin. The covering foundation was used safely with no side effects. None of the subjects discontinued participation. These results suggest that covering of hypopigmented regions with covering foundation can clearly improve the QOL of vitiligo patients. (author abst.)
