Abstract;During the period April 1995 to March 2005, 725 (0.027%) of 2,734,228 slaughter pigs were diagnosed with swine erysipelas at Shibaura Meat Inspection Center. The rates of detection in pigs condemned at our Center have trended downwards over the past ten years, suggesting a divergence from the characteristics of official nationwide data. Infections associated with the pigs condemned included urticaria (32 cases), arthritis (356 cases), and endocarditis (six cases). Of the 727 Erysipelothrix isolates from these cases, 522 (71.8%), 36 (15.0%) and 127 (17.5%) belonged to serotype 1a, 1b, and serotype 2, respectively. It should be noted that multi-drug resistance to OXA, ERFX, DNFX, DSM, OTC and DOXY (2.4%) could be found in the antimicrobial susceptibility test for the isolates during the period from 2001 to 2003. Moreover, the application of detection of ELISA antibody titer in the joint fluids suggested that ELISA would be useful as screening for the purpose of shortening the reservation periods.
