Abstract; We developed a rapid method to determine the concentrations of formaldehyde (FA) and acetaldehyde (AA) in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin of PET bottle. PET samples were ground with liquid nitrogen and heated with water at 120.DEG.C. for 60 minutes. FA and AA in the extract solution was derivatized with 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) and quantified by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with good accuracy (accuracy for 5 repetitions; CV(%): FA, 2.0; AA, 1.4). When we compare the data of AA, we had to separate them into the bottle types, thermostable or non-thermostable. Because the bottle types influenced the data of AA. But they didn't influence the data of FA. (author abst.)
