Abstract; As a part of our program aiming at breeding red radishes with anthocyanin in high content, effect of .GAMMA.-ray irradiation against seeds on growth and anthocyanin production was examined. After seeds of red radishes were respectively subjected to irradiation by .GAMMA.-ray at the intensity of 200Gy, 400Gy, and 600Gy, the three kinds of irradiated seeds and non-irradiated seeds were cultivated from autumn to winter. As a result of minute observation for growth of the red radishes and quantitation of anthocyanin in roots with HPLC, both anthocyanin contents per unit volume and per individual were shown to increase significantly in the 200Gy treated population with retaining volume of individuals in comparison with the non-treated one. In addition, .GAMMA.-ray irradiation against seeds with any intensity brought about no apparent alternation on composition of anthocyanins in red radishes. These findings disclose that 200Gy irradiation by .GAMMA.-ray would be a promising procedure for breeding red radishes with anthocyanin in high content. (author abst.)
