| Abstract;This study deals with city planning basic survey provided by the article 6 in the city planning law. Ministry of construction (at that time) made an operation manual of city planning basic survey for local authorities in 1987. Almost 20 years have passed now and the background around city planning has changed very much. It is time to check the operation manual and consider what city planning basic survey should be. From this point of view, five research items were done: (1) Reviews of related studies, (2) Investigations for the status quo of city planning basic survey in local authorities, (3) Research for similar survey systems in foreign countries, (4) Research for technologies and methods useful for city planning basic survey, and finally (5) Summary of current problems of city planning basic survey and suggestions. The results show that i) items of survey should be flexible depending on conditions of target areas, ii) shares in 3 fields are recommended; a) share between prefectures and municipalities, b) share between data from daily jobs and survey, c) share between city planning basic survey and detailed surveys under plannings and public works.
