Abstract; In recent years, functional dyspepsia (FD), which is not associated with any organic lesions despite the presence of upper GI symptoms, has been attracting increasing attention as a functional disease. We have used a symptom score questionnaire to determine the extent to which drugs such as H2 blockers and gastroprokinetics can improve various symptoms in FD patients. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of the H2 blocker nizatidine to improve various symptoms of FD in 18 patients, 8 men and 10 women aged 43.8.+-.13.4 years on the average, who met the Rome II criteria. Nizatidine is known to inhibit acid secretion and promote gastric emptying. Nizatidine significantly improved scores related to symptoms due to poor motor activity and ulcers. (author abst.)
