Abstract;Morphological and cytochemical characteristics of hemocyte in a clam shrimp, Leptestheria kawachieusis, were examined by light microscopy. Only a single type of hemocyte, granulocyte, were observed in the hemolymph. This hemocyte was small (4.0-7.0.MU.m in diameter), round or oval in shape and characterized by large granule. The granule was round or oval (1.4.MU.m in diameter) and stained eosinophilic with May-Gruenwald using distilled water (pH 5.2) or acid phosphate buffer (pH 5.0 and pH 6.0), basophilic at pH7.0 and pH8.0. Furthermore, the granules were stained with eosin, methylene blue, azure A and safranine O. These results indicate that the granule is amphophilic. Although the granule was stained with toluidine blue and sudan black B, PAS, alcian blue, oil red O and sudan III were negative in the granule. Glycogen was not detected in the hyaloplasm. Phenoloxidase activity was observed in the granule. (author abst.)
