Abstract;A 82-year-old right-handed male developed cerebral infarction with bilateral ageusia. The ageusia persisted 6 months and he visited our clinic. MRI revealed an infarct in the white matter close to the left insular cortex. The lesion seemed to disconnect the central gustatory pathway between the thalamus and the insular cortex. The patient began to take 10mg tablet of paroxetine a day. Four weeks later, he could recognize the tastes of cooked vegetables. Then the treatment with paroxetine was discontinued and the ageusia recurred within 2 weeks. Three weeks after the readministration, he recovered and could recognize the tastes of the vegetables. Three months later, he could taste cooked fishes and meats. His subjective gustatory disturbance was relieved. We conclude that the paroxetine may be useful for the ageusia due to cerebral infarction. (author abst.)
