Abstract;Surface mooring array had been desired to be developed in the Indian Ocean for monitoring ocean and atmosphere variabilities that affect global climate but no long term mooring array, and JAMSTEC initiated the new program to contribute to this. To carry out this program, it is vital to develop a small size buoy system which will enable easier deployment/recovery operation, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance its capability of data collection. To reduce the surface buoy size and achieve these targets, slack-line mooring method is adopted. In this paper, we will describe the mooring system design and results of field tests using a prototype buoy system. We also report developments of a new data processing unit for free format data collection which enables to equip various sensors in future. (author abst.)
