| Abstract;Fairways can be maintained using "Beach and Navigation Keeper: BaNK system" to cope with beach erosion and shoaling of fairways. The system is a method for controling sediment transport with plural submerged asymmetrical structures called BaNK block that generates residual currents from wave motions. The system was applied to a preventive against the shoaling of fairways in laboratory experiments. Experiment-A was performed using salt water instead of fluid mud for fine sand cases. The BaNK system can averagely reduce intrusion of the fluid mud into the fairway 38%. In the Experiment-B, coarse sediment cases were carried out. The BaNK blocks were set on the movable bed which formed a fairway and consisted of coarse particles. The BaNK system reduced the intrusion of the particles into the fairway about 90%. From the results of this study, it was proved that the efficiency of the system to keep fairways was high. (author abst.) |
