| Abstract;Radar is essential to safety navigation for ships. However, it is not perfect equipment and there exist marine accidents. The authors propose using stereo vision that automatically detects ships and/or other objects in order to assist usual navigation equipment. Some researchers have been studying detection of ships using image processing technique. They use a single camera, therefore it is difficult to obtain a distance to a target ship. Stereo vision makes it possible to measure a location of a target. Moreover, we can obtain information of a velocity and a course change of the target by tracing the target's location. In order to realize the method, there are many issues to be solved. This paper mainly considers the camera calibration and accuracy of stereo vision using real sea images and investigates the possibility of the stereo vision system for ship detection.
