Abstract;JAMSTEC has been developing the small deep sea bottom sampling system having a limited role to explore the deepest parts of the oceans since April 2005. This system's main mission is to survey sediments in sea bottoms. This system consists of a station and a small probe. The station carries two types of bottom samplers as well as the probe. One launches the probe to make a preliminary survey, launching the sampler to obtain a sample. The samplers can be changed a gravity core sampler for a grabber. The station holding the probe is putted in the sea from the support vessel. The station launches the probe at the depth for observation. The probe cruises with the thrusters and runs on sea-bottom with the crawler. Using the TV camera of the probe, a suitable point for the sampling can be identified. The station releases the sediment sampler to the point. The sampler gets the sediment at the point. The sample sediment will be investigated in detail on the ship and in laboratories. The new kind of microorganism might be discovered from among the sediment samples. The system assembly will be completed by the spring of 2006 and then its sea trials will be started in winter 2006.
