| Abstract;The deep sea drilling vessel, "Chikyu" has been developed and completed in July, 2005. Riser system, consisting of riser joints with/without buoyancy, special purpose joints and related equipment, was newly developed. The specification of 2,500m water depth with 100 years storm condition was determined as riser system design basis for "Chikyu". 21 inch diameter, 90 ft long riser joint with 4,000kips load rating, the strongest in the world, was newly adopted to fulfill deeper drilling capability. Frequency domain analysis and time domain FEM of riser system was carried out to confirm that behavior of riser system was in conformity within structural strength under the specified hang off and drilling condition. The structural analysis of riser joints was conducted and qualification test was taken place by using full scale pup joint in accordance with API-16R. During sea trial of "Chikyu", riser handling/running test was conducted in combination with BOP and Marine Riser Tensioner, and verified the function and performance of riser system successfully.
