Abstract; In order to utilize the purification of irrigation water-quality and increase the self-supplying of roughage, we investigated the characteristics of nitrogen absorption and purification of nitrate nitrogen of irrigation water by cultivated of fodder paddy on paddy fields. 1. The ability of absorption of the fodder paddy 'mo-retu' was large compared with 'hinohikari', because of high yield of rice straw. 2. To obtain the high dry matter yield, we have to continue succession application of nitrogen fertilizer for the harvest time on fodder paddy 'mo-retu', because this variety has the character which continued the absorption of nitrogen till harvest time. 3. The fodder paddy 'mo-retu' has high removable capacity of nitrate nitrogen of irrigation water from the character of 'mo-retu' with high growth and high yield. 4. The fodder paddy 'mo-retu' is suitable for early season culture, normal season culture, and second harvest culture. Therefore, in case of any methods of cultivated chosen, the cultivation of 'mo-retu' are brought about much removable capacity of nitrogen source of fertilizer and irrigation water. (author abst.)
