Abstract;Image processing technique has an ability to measure and recognize an object. This paper proposes a visual helmet (or spectacles) which can be substituted for human eyes. It is equipped with two CCD cameras which can find the distance to an object placed in front of it. The images picked up by two CCD cameras are analyzed and matched with an image data-base which has been constructed and stored in a laptop computer in advance. The distance information and recognized results of objects are transformed into voice signals and transmitted to a helmet wearer through an earphone. The helmet will provide a helpful tool for blind persons for their comfortable lives. Simulation results shows that a visual helmet is an effective application of image processing technique to a visual assistance for a blind person. (author abst.)
