Abstract;Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a semiconductor device which converts electrical energy into optical energy. The most important potential application of the LEDs will be the general illumination with an environmental friendliness and energy saving. Based on today's state-of-the-art technologies of thin film growth, device fabrication, and packaging, the optical/electrical efficiency from the white LED package is about 20%. About 80% of the total input power is consumed as a heat. Therefore, proper thermal management and analysis in LEDs are critically important for the visualization of the LEDs into illumination industry in the near future. In this paper, basic concepts and potential applications of LEDs will be reviewed as well as thermal characterization techniques for LED packages. (author abst.)
