Abstract; Our recent research revealed Ariake Bay supports a variety of sharks and rays, in addition to teleost fishes. For some elasmobranches, e.g., Sphyrna lewini, Carcharhinus dussumeri, Dasyatis akajei, Dasyatis laevigata, Myriobatis tobijei, and Aetobatus flagellum, estuaries within the bay serve as an essential habitat where they breed from late spring to early autumn and juveniles spend their early period of their life history. Therefore, it is apparent that preservation of these estuaries is essential for maintaining high level of biodiversity in Ariake Bay. (author abst.)
